Katya has an explosive personality with charm to sell, and capturing that in a portrait can be tricky. At first I was torn between trying to bring out that quirky, crazy side of her or show her elegant sexy persona instead. Then I recalled just how stunning I thought she was walking into the Ru Paul’s Drag Race workroom for the first time. The outfit, the hair, the makeup. Everything was on point. She was fresh, different and unique. That was the Katya I had to depict. The Katya everyone fell in love with.
I actually had the pleasure of watching Katya perform live last year during my trip to Brighton. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get to talk to her in a meet-and-greet, and instead just stared blankly at her in awe until she was done interacting with everyone else and eventually got whisked away by security. I was absolutely impressed with her and I will undoubted try my best to see her perform again.
I welcome Katya to my Drag City Collection, and I hope she likes this little scribble I did of her! From Malta, with love.
